Mrs. Kathryn Koll M.M.

This is my 38th year of teaching Music.

St  Bernadette School General Music and Junior High Band 1980-1995

KASD Elementary Music at Jansen, Westside, Sunrise and Woodland 1995-Present

I love teaching music to children. I have the best job ever. Everyone can sing! My task is to teach all students how to sing and help reluctant singers know how to use their voice and enjoy their own personal instrument. Once you know how to create high and low sounds with your voice then you use your ears to tune the sounds you create.

I grew up in Newton, Wisconsin, which is in Manitowoc County with 3 brothers and 3 sisters. I am the 2nd oldest. We are all very close in age.

I have lived in Appleton since 1980. My husband Greg grew up in Appleton. Greg is a house painter. We have 2 daughters Anna (1987) and Kayla (1989). Anna graduated in 2010 from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, majoring in Music Education. Anna is teaching music to children in the Waunakee School District. Kayla graduated in 2012 from  Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin majoring in Elementary/Early Childhood Education. She teaches preschool in Fort Dodge, IA.

Anna married Mike Peck in June 2012 and lives in Madison, WI and Kayla married Ryan Takatsuka in June 2013 and lives in Fort Dodge, IA.

In 2016 my grandson Milo Takatsuka was born and in  2017 my granddaughter Cordelia Peck was born.

I greatly enjoy gardening in my yard with many perennials and going to the library to research many subjects.

I have Bachelors and Masters of Music Degrees with an Emphasis in Kodaly Music Methodology from Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, WI. I hold a lifetime Wisconsin teaching license for K-12 General, Choral and Instrumental Music. I have continued to earn additional graduate credits through  Silver Lake College, UW Stevens Point, University of St. Thomas, Viterbo University and University of Hamline, and attend many music conferences and workshops.

The first 15 years of my teaching career were at St. Bernadette Elementary School in Appleton. I taught General Music to grades K-8 and Junior High Band. I have been teaching in the Kimberly Area School District since 1995. I currently teach 1st through 4th grade at Woodland Elementary School. I also taught private piano lessons for 17 years.

As a musician in the past I have been a part of Operetta’s and musicals at UW Center in Menasha, sang with a show choir, Celebrity Singers and an adult community choir, The White Heron Choral. I was the director of the Cherub Choir in the ACES Christmas Star production and was also a performer in this production for 6 years. Currently I accompany and songlead for Masses at St. Thomas More Church in Appleton.

I am an active member of the following professional organizations:
MENC Music Educators National Conference,
OAKE Organization of American Kodaly Educators,
MKMEA Midwest Kodaly Music Educators Association,
AWAKE Association of Wisconsin Area Kodaly Educators, Board Member and chairperson of the AWAKE Choral Festival 2006-2009 In 2009 I was the chairperson for MKMEA Honors Choir.
